If you buy something and return it, you dont get to keep the points. the points are deducted immediuetly through the system upon return

Yes it would. If you’ve redeemed points, it’s even possible for your balance to go negative. Still, at least you don’t have something hanging around that you won’t use, and odds are you’ll replace it with something and get that point balance back up again.
